ABOUT

This fabric design class incorporates the practical with the creative. Learn the ins and outs of creating a fabric collection, the technical aspects of getting your work ready for production, and finish the three weeks off with a collection of your own!

Learn how to set up designs for tiling, basic illustration techniques, and building a fabric portfolio. This class is a unique mix of computer-screen teaching (Yes! You will be illustrating during these weeks!) and instructional video as I talk to you about terminology, fabric events, and interview other designers in the industry so students get an depth view of how designers in the industry work. (List of interviewees to come)

This class is packed with step-by-step lessons, design theory, and practical applications that put me right there beside you as you design your first fabric collection!

Techniques taught in this course are useful for designers who are interested in uploading their designs to Spoonflower (an instructional video of getting your artwork ready for Spoonflower) and putting your best foot forward in front of fabric manufacturers.

MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE

I love fabric design. It might be the satisfaction of holding that final product in my hands or knowing it can be made into something wonderful. Either way, designing for fabric is very different than designing for the paper, digital, or dishware industries. There are many technical aspects of fabric design that I was unaware of when I started in the industry even though I was a graphic designer with print production experience. This class is meant to help beginning designers and non-fabric designers learn how to produce a collection, learn what creative directors are looking for, and develop a unique style.

This is a three week course (14 lessons). Lessons are different everyday. Some include instructional illustrator videos, while others include detailed lessons on terminology and design theory. Inspirational interviews with designers are sprinkled throughout the course to help you get excited to create as well as give you insights into the life of a fabric designer.  If you are unable to do the course during the scheduled time, the class is available for the life of CarinaGardner.com and can be taken self-paced.

Like all my multi-week design courses, we work HARD during these three weeks! I fit as much as a possibly can into the course to help inspire and educate you. Being a good designer means working hard and being passionate about your work.

A gallery and forum are available to students.
